Curriculum vitae

Prof. Dr. Isabell M. Welpe is a professor and head of the Strategy and Organization research group and cofounder of the TUM Blockchain Center at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. In her current projects, Prof. Dr. Isabell M. Welpe focuses on the digital transformation of companies, the impact of Blockchain on the economy and organizations, predictors of startup success and the future of the financial and investment industry as well as strategy, leadership and innovation. She has published studies on, e.g. “Disrupting Industries with Blockchain”, “Digital Business Models”, „Social Media as Information Markets“. Her current interests are in the potential of emerging technologies, such as distributed ledger & blockchain technology for novel value chains, business models and organizational forms. Isabell M. Welpe studied management at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, USA. In addition, she completed an MSc at the London School of Economics. She is a an associate at the Centre for Blockchain Technologies at the University College London. Her research is covered in the media, such as the Harvard Business Manager, MIT Sloan Management Review.

Selected current research projects
  • “Digital Work Design – Turning Risks into Chances”: The goal of the project is to assess how digitalization influences work design. Moreover, chances and risks of these changes shall be assessed and factors on the leadership and organizational level that help to turn these risks into chances shall be identified.
  • Web3 and Blockchain: “The goal of this project is to study the impact of DLT, DAOs, NFTs, Tokens on Business Models and the way we organize work and working together across different industries. We look at the financial industry and how Decentralised Finance impacts banks and insurance firms”
  • Predicting venture success: “We predict venture by focusing on the following predictors of startup performance: Team dynamics and processes, Team diversity (demographic and cognitive), Personality combinations in teams, Physical appearance, Ecosystems,  Funding background. The research design is quantitative/correlational based on secondary and trace data as well as startup/personality analyzers. We are currently setting up a database with all German startups, which will serve as the basis for the complementary data collection per study.
