Curriculum vitae

Alexander Hübner (born 1978) is a Professor of Business Administration at the Technical University of Munich where he holds the Chair of Supply and Value Chain Management at the TUM Campus Straubing. His research focuses on the design of effective, efficient, and sustainable supply chains. His work involves developing optimization approaches and decision support tools for transportation systems, inventory management, capacity management, and assortment planning with particular applications in retailing, consumer goods industries, and health care systems.

He studied Business Administration at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt where he also completed his doctoral studies in 2011. He was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Catholic University in 2013. He then moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where we were Associate Professor at the MIT’s Luxembourg Centre of Logistics. Before he moved to the TUM, he led the Institute of Supply Chain Management at the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel. He worked for six years at McKinsey & Company and consulted international clients in supply chain management, sales, and operations projects across various industries.

He is leading the Working Group on Retail Operations of the Association of European Operational Research Societies. Further, he is a member of the advisory board of the German Logistics Association (BVL).

Alexander Hübner has authored and co-authored several research papers and industry reports on supply chain management, vehicle routing, and retail operations. His research has been published in Transportation Science, European Journal of Operation Research, OR Spectrum, Omega, Business Research, among others.

Selected current research projects

Omni-channel operations: In cooperation with leading European Fashion, DIY, grocery, and consumer electronics retailer, we investigate the impact of the combination of online and offline sales channels and the related logistics processes. Strategies and optimization tools for omnichannel operations are developed.

Vehicle routing: In cooperation with the University of Porto and two leading European grocery retailer, we develop different solution approaches for the transportation problems with multi-compartment vehicles.

Shelf space optimization: In cooperation with one of the largest European grocery retailers, we develop innovative solution methods for shelf space planning. Applications range from store optimization to shelf space design options.
